The 411 On When to Call 911

How Non-medical (& Medical, too) Clinicians Can Determine Medical Compromise

Medical compromise occurs in varying degrees in every eating disorder—from mild to immediately life-threatening, and compromise can worsen rapidly. The more and earlier that non-medical (and medical) clinicians know how to assess and interpret signs and symptoms of compromise, the better for the sufferer. In an easy to understand and enjoyable way, these will be delineated and discussed so that dietitians and therapists (as well as medical professionals) will be empowered to better care for their clients. Numerous case examples will highlight the salient issues.

Learning Objectives:

  1. The audience will learn various main signs and symptoms of danger from EDs, including cardiac, GI, neurologic, endocrine and other issues from malnutrition or from behaviors, such as exercise

  2. Simple and easy to interpret assessment tools will be shown that all can use to screen for medical compromise.

  3. The audience will learn the physiology of how these signs are useful.
